Job Function:  Production Operations

Under direction of the Plant HR Manager, the Human Resources Generalist manages the day-to-day operations of the Human Resources office and the administration of Human Resources policies, procedures and programs.  The HR Generalist provides advice, assistance and follow-up on company policies and procedures and coordinates the resolution of specific policy-related and procedural issues and inquiries.  Position responsibilities are in the following functional areas:  employee relations, employment law compliance, HR policy administration, employee on-boarding, HR office management, Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS), record retention, employee benefits, and compensation.


Essential Job Duties  

  • Recommends, implements, and supports employee relations practices necessary to establish a positive employer-employee relationship and promote a high level of employee morale and motivation.
  • Participates in the investigation and resolution process when employee concerns are brought forth.
  • Advises managers and supervisors about the steps in the performance counseling and progressive discipline system. Counsels and acts as a business partner with managers, supervisors, and employees on employment issues.
  • Helps drive employee engagement and Leprino Quality initiatives and processes.
  • Leads the New Employee Orientation and onboarding of new employees.
  • Coordinates employee relations activities, such as, recognition celebrations, incentive plan meetings, performance awards, picnics, and parties.


Employment Law

  • Ensures facility compliance with all existing governmental employment laws, such as, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), California State Labor Law, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), Affirmative Action (AA) the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the California Family Rights Act (CFRA), the California Pregnancy Disability Leave Act (PDL), Kin Care, and compliance with OFCCP guidelines for equal employment opportunity.
  • Researches and interprets new, revised or proposed federal and state employment law regulations.  Creates and implements new plant-level Human Resources policies and procedures as needed.
  • Protects the interests of employees and the company in accordance with company Human Resources policies and governmental laws and regulations.


HR Policy Administration

  • Executes company Human Resources policies and strategies at the plant level.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of plant-level Human Resources policies and practices and ensures consistent application of those policies and practices.
  • Partners with management to communicate Human Resources policies, procedures, programs and laws.
  • Provides advice, assistance and follow-up on company policies, procedures, and documentation.
  • Conducts internal audits of HR policy and procedure application.
  • Coordinates the HRIS system and HR record retention through the Administrative Assistants.


HR Office Management

  • Manages the daily transactions of the Human Resources office.
  • Provides direction and leadership to the HR Administrative Assistants.
  • Establishes and maintains an accurate and employee friendly environment.
  • Manages the plant uniform contract, plant janitorial contract, department supply budget, and plant employee relations budget.


Human Resources Information Systems

  • Maintains the HRIS employee-related data bases.
  • Prepares, analyzes, and distributes reports that are necessary to carry out the functions of the department.
  • Oversees the attendance tracking system and performance documentation process.



Record Retention

  • Ensures compliance with company record retention policies.
  • Manages HR hard copy filing systems and maintains accuracy.
  • Completes internal audits of HR records.


Employee Benefits & Compensation

  • Serves as the site subject matter expert on the company benefits program.
  • Provides day-to-day benefits administration services.  Assists employees with claim issue resolution and ensures the accurate/timely execution of the company benefits program through the coordination of the Administrative Assistants.
  • Manages the annual benefits open enrollment process.
  • Administers leave of absence program and ensures proper coordination of state disability insurance program.
  • Oversees the tracking and communication of FMLA, CFRA, leave of absence and PDL usage.
  • Assist with Workers Compensation program.  Monitors claims and communicates directly with the claims administrator and corporate risk management.  Coordinates medical management and modified work duty programs.
  • Assists with the employee incentive plan administration.
  • Maintains the plant wage structure.




Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong knowledge of state and federal employment law and practices.
  • Working knowledge of benefits and compensation programs.
  • Familiar with best practices in Human Resources programs and processes.
  • High level of confidentiality.
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite.  SAP and Kronos experience a plus.
  • Familiar with industrial operations, preferably dairy or food manufacturing.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Excellent interpersonal and coaching skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Process improvement mindset.
  • The ability to influence upward, laterally, and downward without any direct line authority.


General Experience/Educational Background


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Human Resources, Business, or Organizational Development or similar program.
  • 3-5 years of progressive leadership experience in Human Resources exempt professional position.
  • Strong leadership with demonstrated skills and ability to coach and develop others.
  • Strong knowledge of state and federal employment law and practices.
  • Working knowledge of benefits and compensation programs.
  • Familiar with best practices in Human Resources programs and processes.
  • Familiar with industrial operations.
  • High level of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational skills.


  • Specialized training in employment law, organizational development, employee relations, and preventative labor relations.
  • Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification.
  • Prior cheese and/or dairy foods manufacturing experience.
  • Knowledge and ability to manage continuous improvement processes such as Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, etc.
  • Preferred experience with leading and/or supporting Continuous Improvement initiatives.
  • Knowledge and experience working within CI methodologies in the following areas:  Kaizen, Standard Work, 5S Program, Process Mapping, Cause Mapping, and Project Management. 


Language and Technical Skills

  • Proficient computer knowledge, including Microsoft Office products.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to individuals at all levels within the company.
  • Familiarity or ability to learn SAP, or similar integrated manufacturing system.
  • Ability to influence upward, laterally, and downward without any direct line authority.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to determine the root cause to issues that arise, using skills of investigation, organizing thoughts and conclusions, and presenting these solutions to others.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • This position will be exposed to both an office and production operations environment.  Industrial setting includes both wet and dry production areas with loud noise and varying degress of temperature from freezer to extreme heat.
  • Long periods of both sedentary activity and movement (walking/standing) is required.
  • Bending, squatting and climbing of steps may be needed occasionally.
  • Specific vision may be required for this position, including close vision, distance vision, color and depth perception, and the ability to read computer screens for extended time periods.
